NY Times Report on Deaths in Immigration Detention

The Times describes the horrible conditions in jails and other facilities for immigrants being held by the US government, often for minor violations of immigration law. The story, published yesterday, highlights the death of a 52-year-old tailor who fell while in the Elizabeth Detention Center and later died of his injuries. Officials at the Center apparently did not call for medical care immediately after the fall and left him shackled to a wall, unconscious and foaming at the mouth.

Readers of Queer Law Watch will recall last summer an HIV positive detainee was denied access to her HIV medication and died as a result.
